About Us

Spellbinder Books first opened its doors in March of 1970, and has since become a favorite Bishop institution and meeting-place.  We pride ourselves on being independently and locally owned, and feel we’re lucky to live and do business in the beautiful Eastern Sierra.

Current Owner Lynne Almeida has been at the helm since 2000.  If you’d told her back when she was in high school that she’d live in Bishop one day, she’d’ve thought you were nuts!  Now, though, she thoroughly enjoys life on the East Side.  In her spare time, she (of course) reads, hikes, gardens, and ‘moonlights’ as a teacher of dog agility classes.

Lead Bookseller Cathy Cannon moved to the Bishop area in 2001 and still can’t get over how lucky she feels to live so close to world-class hiking and spectacular scenery. She’s always interested in hearing about what people are reading and is happy to help customers find just the right book for their reading preferences.

Children’s Book Buyer Genevieve Woods

Bookseller Ryan Finch grew up in Bishop.  After going off to the bay area for college he returned to the Eastern Sierra and has been enjoying selling books here at Spellbinder since fall 2014.  As well as reading voraciously, mostly in philosophy, biography, and history, Ryan is an avid musician who can be spotted performing around town with the Idle Hands String Band.

Doug Thornburg began bookselling at Spellbinder a couple years back. He came to Bishop, as a six year-old, the same year Spellbinder opened (coinicidence?)! Doug enjoys attending his kids’ sporting events, peering at the Whites early in the evening, and hiking with his girlfriend. He reads mostly non-fiction, though his kids are recently helping push him through the Harry Potter books and Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games series.
